You make labels with a word processor???

What is a word processor

A word processor is a piece of software designed for creating documents; letters, memos, etc. Examples that everyone knows are Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer. Most people use a word processor for common office tasks, or for taking notes or creating other basic documents.

Today’s word processors are advanced

Word and OpenOffice have become very advanced, with more layout and design options than you can shake a stick at. For this reason, some people use them to do things like design pamphlets or flyers, or even for presentations. Professionals, however, who create these types of advanced documents for a living, would never dream of using Word or OpenOffice- they just weren’t made for it.

Using Word for labeling???

Even more absurd is the concept of using Microsoft Word or OpenOffice to create a label. Why? Because word processors simply don’t have any of the tools you need to make labeling easy and fast. Sure, it can be done, and perhaps the output will look decent, but it just isn’t easy! A label that might take you several minutes in Word would literally take seconds in real labeling software.

But, it’s how I learned to do it!

Some people continue to use Word or OpenOffice for label creation because they started out that way. Those people don’t know what they’re missing! They’ve become accustomed to doing it the hard way, and they’re not sure if changing will be worth it. It was so hard to get it down in the first place, so why change???

What these people are forgetting is that it was hard to learn because they were trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole. Word and OpenOffice weren’t made for labeling! When these users finally make the move to real labeling software, they realize that they learn quickly and label creation becomes easy and instantaneous. They wonder why it took them so long to make the change!

Durable Safety Labels, Custom Made on Your PC

Vinyl die-cut labels for arc flashEnhance safety with ultra-durable die-cut vinyl labels!

Now available in a variety of OSHA and NEC colors, our safety labels are the best in the industry. At 4mil, they are among the thickest vinyl die-cuts you can buy, and the PET over-laminate increases the life of the vinyl by up to 2-years in regular use. These labels can last up to 8-years!

Most people use these types of labels for arc flash labeling, and indeed they are perfectly suited to arc flash labeling. Engineers find that you save time and money when printing arc flash labels in-house, rather than outsourcing the task to a 3rd party. Have the safety labels you need, when you need them, for a fraction of the cost.

When combined with our full-resin thermal transfer ribbon, the result is a UV and scratch resistant label that can stand up to the harshest environments.

OSHA Compliant Labeling

OSHA provides an outline of the proper colors to use for safety labeling. ANSI and other bodies provide additional details, but the colors set forth by OSHA should be considered whenever you are labeling in a US facility or workplace.

Here is a quote from a website that has information on OSHA labeling:

“Evaluating the potential hazards of chemicals, and communicating information concerning hazards and appropriate protective measures to employees, may include … developing and maintaining a written hazard communication program for the workplace … labeling of containers of chemicals in the workplace…”

Welcome to my new workplace safety blog

Welcome. This blog site is dedicated to workplace safety, and more specifically, to labeling hazards for a safer workplace. There are many ways to avoid an accident in the workplace, and labeling hazards properly is on the top of the list. By properly labeling hazards, workplace injuries and accidents can be drastically reduced.

I’ll be addressing issues such as OSHA compliance, ANSI label printing and other government regulations regarding workplace safety identification. I’ll also touch on specific areas such as arc flash hazards or NFPA RTK chemical labeling.

Feel free to comment with your insights and stories on OSHA compliance or general workplace safety.
